What to Wear to Summer Sporting Events (Wimbledon, Polo, Horse Racing)

Summer sporting events are some of the most elegant occasions on the social calendar, each with its own unique traditions and dress codes. Knowing what to wear is one of the most frequently requested etiquette tips, and it’s a topic often covered in etiquette classes because dressing appropriately shows respect for both the event and its traditions. Whether you’re attending Wimbledon, a polo match, or a day at the races, understanding dress code etiquette is just as important as knowing the rules of the sport. Here’s how to get it right with confidence and style.

Wimbledon

Wimbledon is one of the most prestigious sporting events in the world, and the dress code reflects that. The grounds themselves don't enforce a strict dress code for spectators, but the tradition is well-established: smart, elegant, and summer-appropriate.

If wearing a dress or skirt, a midi or tea-length dress in a classic print or solid color is a strong choice. Think floral, navy, cream, or pastel. A tailored blazer or a light jacket is smart for cooler evenings. Avoid anything too casual: no ripped jeans, no overly revealing looks, and definitely no sportswear unless you're playing.

If you are wearing trousers, chinos or smart trousers paired with a button-down shirt or a polo shirt work beautifully. A lightweight blazer elevates the look. Trainers are generally accepted on the grounds, but smarter shoes are always more appropriate.

If you have tickets to the Royal Box, the dress code is strictly formal: suits and ties for men, and smart dresses or suits for women. Hats are not required but always welcomed.

Polo Matches

Polo has a wonderful blend of the outdoorsy and the sophisticated. The traditional dress for spectators leans toward smart casual with a countryside sensibility.

Dresses/ Skirts:  a floaty midi dress, a shirt dress, or tailored separates all work well. This is an event where a wide-brimmed hat is not just acceptable but actively encouraged. Think garden party meets country weekend.

Trousers: chinos with a collared shirt is the foundation. A linen blazer is a lovely touch, especially for a more formal match or a charity event. Avoid suits, which can read as overdressed for the relaxed polo setting.

One important note: the divot stomp happens at halftime, where spectators walk onto the field to press the turf back down. Wear shoes you can comfortably walk on grass in. Stilettos on a polo lawn are not the look.

Horse Racing

Royal Ascot is the pinnacle of horse racing fashion, but the principles apply to most race days. Dress codes vary by enclosure, so always check in advance.

For Royal Ascot's Royal Enclosure in England, the rules are specific to gender and enforced. Women must wear a dress or skirt that falls below the knee, with straps of at least one inch wide. Midriffs must be covered. A hat or fascinator with a base of at least 4 inches is required. Off-the-shoulder, halterneck, and strapless gowns are not permitted.

For men in the Royal Enclosure, a black or grey morning coat with a waistcoat and tie is required. No novelty ties.

For other enclosures and more casual race days, the vibe is closer to Wimbledon's: smart, summer-appropriate, and polished. A printed dress, statement hat, and heeled sandals hit the right note. Fascinators and statement headpieces are always welcome.

General Rules for All Summer Sporting Events

  • Check the specific dress code for your enclosure or seating area before you go.
  • Consider the practicalities: grass, outdoor seating, long days in the sun. Comfort matters.
  • A hat serves double duty at outdoor events, both stylish and sun-protective.
  • Heels on grass are rarely a good idea. Block heels, wedges, or flats are far more practical.
  • When in doubt, dress up rather than down. You will never regret being slightly overdressed at a prestigious event.

Summer sporting events are an opportunity to dress beautifully and enjoy one of the great pleasures of the season. Respect the occasion, check the dress code in advance, and dress with intention. It's part of what makes these events so special.
